Medication Aides assist patients in accurately taking oral, topical, or intravenous medications that must be administered in correct dosages and/or follow a strict medical protocol. A CHHA or CNA cannot administer medication without a Medication Aide certification. Of further assistance to both CNA and CHHA professionals, a Medication Aide is allowed to administer medication without supervision.
In most cases, medication aides are directly supervised by doctors, registered nurses, or other licensed caregivers. For this reason, CNA/CHHA professionals will earn this certification to improve their employment opportunities. Employment can be found in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, schools, rehabilitation facilities, and correctional institutions.
Job opportunities are especially plentiful in the healthcare profession. Employment for medication aides is projected to grow 21% from 2012-2022, by the bureau of Labor Statistics. This is faster than average for all careers.
